Free American Education in Thailand

  1. Dear Jao Moragoat,

I have a question I would like you to help me with. My husband and I were students in the U.S., where our daughter was born, giving her the right to be a U.S. citizen. However, my husband and I have to return to Thailand when our visas expire, and so we will have to bring back our daughter (to Thailand) with us.

Actually, I would prefer her to study here (US) as it would be free. I would like to know if you know of any school in Thailand for American kids that can study for free. I’m so confused as I want our kid get language skills, however, we don’t have money to send her to international school for that (in Thailand) as it is so expensive. Please kindly assist us with your reply.

    Gratefully

  2. Dear Pun,

Unfortunately, I am unaware of any ‘free English speaking schools’ let alone specifically for American children in Thailand. As you know, in Thailand, it is the ‘haves,’ who get handed an overwhelming majority of the best opportunities, particularly in education.

Those who ‘have not’ are at a disadvantage as is the case in most rest of the world, and if they are to get decent opportunities in life must apply themselves with more determination than average folks.

Since you suggest you and your husband are more in the ‘have not’ category, I can only assume that you had to apply yourselves diligently someway or another in order for you be able to study in the USA—as that certainly wasn’t cheap nor free assuming we’re talking about post-secondary level.

If anything, there are missionary and charitable organizations targeting poverty stricken / poor regions of Thailand i.e. near the Burmese border, etc. in which western volunteers teach and assist communities and children in the pits of poverty, to some extent . I could go out of my way listing and referencing such non profits, however I don’t feel your daughter is a candidate for such channels.

Instead, I will offer you my Siamese American logic and advice:

If it isn’t possible for you to keep your daughter in the US, so be it. Accept, Adapt and Apply. At the moment, I myself can not have my Thai American son in free public school system of the US as I would also prefer. So for now, he studies in a Thai school with limited language exposure. To top it off, I have to work distant from him so he stays with his mom and grandma upcountry, who speak just Thai with him. Life is full of sacrifices and tradeoff, though rest assured, his due American days will come in time.

Anyway, an American education wouldn’t teach your daughter to sit down and hope for freebies to be handed to her or fall in her lap just because she has a certain birth certificate.

The best education is not what a free public school in USA will give her, nor what an expensive international school in Thailand will offer likewise. It is the core values that she will learn from those who are closest to her–you, her parents are her first and most important teachers.

So if you want her to gain language skills, but you can’t afford for someone else to give them to her, then you’ve got to raise her to be able to and go seize them.

It is not impossible to obtain your objectives, especially amidst the ITC age in which knowledge is circulated swiftly and virtually free. Be strong and control your own destiny.

    Kind Regards

    Jao Moragoat
